Thanking him for the book he sent by way of his minister, Abbott Lawrence, which "shows how much care you have in England for the preservation of human life"; observing that this spirit is lacking in his own country, where "we are too much occupied with going ahead to take much heed of the risks," and that he has set an example in all that he has done for the mariner; describing warm feelings for Alnwick and England invoked by the Northumberland lion of the arms stamped on the book's cover.
